Open Concept Kitchen in Chevy Chase, Maryland

Open Concept Kitchen in Chevy Chase, Maryland

Project Overview

For this project in a beautiful forested Chevy Chase neighborhood, our clients, a couple with two young daughters, approached us with an interest in expanding their kitchen. They both worked at least part time from home, and were struggling to operate comfortably in their existing kitchen. It was small, cramped, and closed off from the dining and living rooms. An awkward butler’s pantry took up space without offering much utility. They asked if we could open up the first level of their home, and design a kitchen with more counter and storage space, an island with seating for informal dining, and an accent tile backsplash behind the range.

Design + Layout

In accordance with our clients’ wishes, we drew up an open-concept floor plan which linked the kitchen, living, and dining rooms together. We needed to remove three walls, two of which were load bearing, in order to open the floor. In the kitchen, a masonry wall which had been separating the butler’s pantry was removed, giving us plenty of extra space to work with. The fridge was tucked neatly out of sight, remaining easily accessible across from the range.

Style + Finishes

Our clients loved the navy and white combination for the hand-glazed kitchen cabinets–paired with white Caesarstone countertops, the palette creates a smart and classy look, without leaning too hard on current trends. The geometric backsplash tile adds a visual texture carrying up to the ceiling, and flat black light fixtures and faucet complement the black framed windows, staying consistent with the well-articulated accent backsplash.
