Contemporary Kitchen in Dupont Circle, Washington, DC
Project Overview
Our client wanted to update his 2000’s French provincial-style kitchen to something smart, classic, and minimal. The space was already connected to a dining/entertaining area, so the goal was to downplay some of the more prominent kitchen elements. We achieved this by cabinet-match paneling the refrigerator and dishwasher, going with a glass induction cooktop (vs. a range), and installing a flush-mounted hood in the soffit above.
Design + Layout
With a simple kitchen remodel, we had little in the way of structural considerations, however we needed to make sure that the arrangement of our cabinets and appliances served the overall goal of a minimal clean look. Therefore, we created as few taller cabinet elements as possible – just the fridge and wall oven – to avoid drawing the eye to floor-to-ceiling cabinetry. The rest of the cabinets rest behind the line of the fridge and oven, underneath a subtle quartz countertop. The inset induction cooktop is both highly functional and nearly vanishes into the counter surface. A simple faucet over an undermount stainless steel sink in the island completes the minimal design.
Style + Finishes
In keeping with the design, we chose bare-bones frameless shaker style cabinets, for extra-clean lines throughout the paneled elements. Flat black hardware, lighting, and fixtures perform well without being obtrusive. A beautiful highlight, one side of the waterfall island is finished in stained oak, tying together the floor and counter, with a dovetail joint at waist height.
