From Gloomy to Glowing: Master Bathroom Renovation in Bethesda, Maryland

Project Overview

Budget: View our cost guide
Timeline: September 2024 – January 2025

Our clients were a couple with a young daughter who had recently bought their home and found us on Instagram. The master suite was about 30 years old and hadn't been touched since. To get from the bedroom to the bathroom, you had to walk down a hallway lined with closets. The bath itself had one of those giant jet tubs, if you've owned a house built in the 90s, you know the one.

Design + Layout

We remodeled the master bath, built his-and-hers walk-in closets, and added a laundry space. The biggest structural puzzle was the tub. It was a Concretti designer concrete piece, and it weighed about 500 pounds empty. Add water and all the stone we were putting in the room, and we had to reinforce the framing under the second floor before any of it could go in.

Style + Finishes

The stone was the heart of this one. We picked out each slab of Calacatta Breccia Violetta for the countertops by hand and mapped out where the veining would land before anything got cut. The shower walls are a softer Architessa French Vanilla tile, and the floors are Architessa brick mosiac , which sets off the warmth and spa-like feel of the space.

We went with white oak cabinetry to balance out the heavier use of stone. We tucked the outlets up into the counter splashes so nothing obstructed the marble, and the light switches are small brass knobs instead of the usual plastic. The plumbing is brass too, left unfinished, so it'll naturally age over time. The walls are a hand-troweled Roman clay that gives the whole suite a soft glow when the light hits it right.
