From Tired to Tailored: Rowhouse Remodel in Kalorama Triangle, Washington, DC

The homeowners of this rowhouse in Washington's Historic Kalorama Triangle came to us to brighten a dimly lit kitchen, eliminate underused service staircases, and upgrade worn finishes.

For these budding empty nesters, gaining versatility and functionality was top priority, as was maintaining the character of the original home.

A clear goal was to open the kitchen up to natural light and bring in elements of green. The selected slabs of Tahiti Quartzite, the powder room floor tile and wainscot, as well as the kitchen walls speckled the rooms in green. A commitment to sustainability inspired kitchen selections such as natural cherry shelves, Marmoleum floors, and natural stone countertops. Additionally, the clients elected to restore the original windows and wood flooring where possible.

With family members frequently coming and going, flexibility in the kitchen is a must. A bespoke island lives under the kitchen's tea counter. When rolled to the center, it serves as additional counter space. When pulled over, it converts a bay window into a breakfast nook.

A few design elements echo the delicate trimwork throughout the original rowhouse. For example the muntin cabinet doors by Elmwood, the powder room wainscotting, and the pencil and chair rail tile accents in the hall bath.

Additional storage was added to nestle in the wood burning fireplace from either side without detracting from the original trimwork and windows.
