Green Cabinet Kitchen Remodels We Designed and Love in Washington, DC and Northern Virginia

In this remodel, the homeowners of this Del Ray bungalow needed more space but didn’t want to leave the neighborhood they loved. Instead of moving, they opted for a full home renovation and addition, with a spacious galley kitchen as a key design element.

The reimagined kitchen has the functional benefits of separate rooms while maintaining an open feel. A glass wall separates the kitchen from the living room, allowing natural light to spread throughout the lower level.

Deep green custom cabinetry sets the tone for the space, creating a rich contrast against marble countertops and hand-glazed tile. Bright whites and warm wood accents balance the bold color, while a muted hardwood floor adds warmth and texture. The result is a kitchen that seamlessly blends modern convenience with timeless character.

For this historic home in DC’s Shaw neighborhood, we transformed a cramped, underutilized kitchen and dining room into a single spacious gathering place. By removing the wall between the two areas, we maximized storage while creating a more open and social space that better suits the homeowners’ lifestyle.

Previously, the kitchen's interior design felt isolated from the rest of the home, making it both uninviting and impractical. Our redesign involved reconfiguring the layout, replacing the exterior window and door, and incorporating a new island with a breakfast bar, a dry bar, and illuminated floating shelves for additional storage.

The kitchen’s striking aesthetic balances classic and modern elements. Floor-to-ceiling custom cabinets on one wall open up in the center, revealing warm walnut floating shelves and the exposed brick of the home’s shared rowhouse wall. A mix of contemporary lighting and subtly detailed shaker-style cabinetry brings a fresh update to the space while maintaining its historic charm.

This ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) project was shaped in part by a citywide initiative in Alexandria aimed at refining zoning regulations to support their construction. The kitchen specifically was designed to create a seamless flow between the indoor space and the shared courtyard nestled between the ADU and the main house. A 10-foot-wide set of countertop-resting windows opens fully to the courtyard, creating an outdoor bar perfect for entertaining.

Functionality was a key focus of this renovation, with a cabinet-mounted speed convection oven and a two-burner induction cooktop ensuring efficiency in a compact space. A full-size farmhouse sink makes cleanup effortless, balancing practicality with style. The material palette enhances the connection to nature, with cool-toned oak flooring and drab olive cabinetry creating a grounded, organic feel. Natural light floods the space, again enhancing the indoor-outdoor living experience.
