Kitchen Remodel in Upper Marlboro, Maryland
Project Overview
We were especially happy when the clients came to us, saying that they were ready to go with a kitchen remodel. In past years, we had completed many projects for them, and become good friends in the process. The house was built in the seventies, and the kitchen was still in the same condition as when it had been built – it even had a trash compactor. As well as being outdated, the layout was poor, and the clients like to cook.
Design and Layout
Functionality drove all aspects of the design. By moving the oven and microwave to the island, we created the triangle that all good kitchens need. The house has a very open floor plan, but since there was no seating in the kitchen, socializing was difficult when cooking was in process – the dining and seating areas were too far away, often leaving the cook stranded. To define the kitchen, and give it some visual distinction, we used a different flooring material than the rest of the house – eco friendly Marmoleum.
Style and Finishes
Because the house is decorated in a traditional manner, complete with a stacked stone fireplace in the living room, we went for a transitional look. The main run of cabinetry is clear Maple, and the door type is Shaker – one of the most universally loved door styles. Because we felt a completely Maple kitchen was getting muddy, we included a white painted island with an elevated lyptus wood bar area to give the kitchen contrast and maintain a fresh look. The custom stone hood with a vinegar stained wood trim, ties into the living room stone fireplace and mantel.
Construction and Final Product
Since the house was built more recently than most of the homes we work in, the construction process was a quick five weeks. We did end up shoring up the subfloor, as it was under built to begin with. Creating the two radii in the floor was a challenge, but using a home-made compass (made out of string and a pencil) we got the even curves which we needed. Probably the most surprising part of the finished kitchen, was how it dramatically gave the whole house an updated, fresh feel without standing out as a newly remodeled space.
What the Customer Said
“We have been extremely pleased with all work performed by these fine young men. Their attention to detail and customer satisfaction is above and beyond others in their field. We have found them to be very trustworthy and friendly and have never hesitated to leave them in our home while we have been away to do their work. At the end of every work day, they always clean up, even if they are coming back the next day. We will be using them for all of our projects in the future and highly recommend their company.”
