Mid-Century Modern Kitchen Remodel in Alexandria, Virginia

Project Overview
This was a unique project for our team. Our clients brought notable expertise, with the husband working as a carpenter and the wife as an architect. With their strong background in home renovation and design, they collaborated closely with one of our architects to bring the plans to life. Their original kitchen felt cut off from the rest of the home and lacked the functionality the clients wanted. Having tackled most of the house themselves over time, the kitchen was one of the final spaces they were ready to transform.

Design + Layout
With an abundance of experience between the homeowners and our team, finding the right layout came together naturally. The clients’ vision included removing a load-bearing wall to connect the kitchen with the dining room, making way for a spacious island and expanded work surfaces. We also wanted to draw attention to the original sloped ceiling—a hallmark of the home’s mid-century style—by creating a bold contrast between the vent hood shroud and the crisp white ceiling. The resulting angles accentuate the slope and emphasize the height difference on each side of the space.

Style + Finishes
While most of the selections leaned toward clean, timeless design—slab-style base cabinets, ash uppers with horizontal grain, and subtly veined quartz countertops—we also introduced a touch of boldness through the use of coordinated geometric tile on both the backsplash and island. Sunlight from the large window above the sink shines across the textured tile throughout the day, creating dynamic light and shadow. Flat black and bronze details in the fixtures complete the space, balancing modern lines with a warm, livable feel.
