Emerald Green Kitchen Remodel in Shaw, Washington, DC

Project Overview
In this historic Shaw row home, our clients wanted to rework a kitchen and dining area that felt disconnected and inefficient. By merging the two spaces into one and anchoring the design with dramatic emerald cabinetry that stretches from floor to ceiling, we created a more functional, welcoming space. The result: more storage, better flow, and a kitchen that now supports how the homeowners cook, host, and live.

Design and Layout
Previously, the kitchen was a small, closed-off room cut off from both the dining area and the rest of the home. Its isolation made it difficult to use effectively. To improve flow and functionality, we opened up the wall dividing the two rooms, installed new exterior doors and windows, and reimagined the kitchen layout. The updated plan includes a central island with a breakfast bar, a dry bar for entertaining, and floating illuminated shelves that add both form and function.

Style and Finish
The space blends classic and bold elements, starting with a crisp black-and-white tile floor and ceiling details that contrast beautifully with the rich green cabinetry. Along the far wall, the tall cabinets make room for warm walnut floating shelves and a peek at the original brick—a nod to the home’s historic charm. Clean-lined shaker-style doors and striking modern light fixtures round out the design, giving the kitchen a fresh feel while honoring its architectural roots.
